Shufen’s affinity for line and sensitivity towards shapes in visual imagery is evident in her work and in combination with her painterly brushwork, conveys an inimitable sense of “child-like” simplicity. Given her inquiring nature, she heeded the call to follow her bliss which saw her pursuing formal art studies at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where she maintained a small home studio in the suburbs. Shufen graduated with a Masters in Art in 2016 and prior to her return to Singapore, her work has been exhibited in group shows in the city. Her two-month artist residency in France in 2017, cemented her reverence for the classical tradition in painting. Her interest in the myth of the place and space in relation to creation continues to influence her work.
